손동현 Donghyun Son

손동현(b. 1980)은 동북아시아의 전통적인 회화 기법을 활용하여 영화에 등장하는 가상의 인물을 그려낸 작품으로 미술계에 등장한다. 그동안 작가는 실존 인물을 대상으로 하는 전통적인 초상화 제작의 대전제를 뛰어넘어 가상의 인물을 선택해서 그림으로 재현하는 아이러니한 작업을 시작으로, 실존 인물을 그린다고 하더라도 하나의 형상으로 규정할 수 없는 인물을 선보여 왔다. 그리고 근작에서는 인물을 재현한다기보다는 초상화의 형식을 통해서 동북아시아 회화의 전통적인 기법과 매체의 특성을 담아낸 작업을 이어가고 있다. 손동현은 중국의 사혁이 주장한 그림을 제작하는 여섯 가지의 요체인 육법(六法), 먹의 물성, 산수화의 표현 기법이나 조형 요소를 인물의 성격이나 외형으로 치환해서 새로운 인물을 탄생시킨다. 그림의 대상이 변화하는 과정에서도 그의 작업은 동북아시아의 전통적인 작화법이나 정신성에 대한 의문과 탐구의 결과라는 점은 변함이 없다. 

Donghyun Son (b. 1980) is known for painting fictional characters in popular films such as Darth Vader from the Star Wars Saga and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles using traditional Northeast Asian painting techniques. Son wittily draws with methods reserved for traditional portrait of real-world figures, and when he does paint real-world characters, they are always complex, multi-faceted, larger-than-life personalities, like Michael Jackson.

In his most recent works, this witty style steps away from the subject matter and toward a bolder interpretation of the painting techniques of the Northeast Asian tradition as well as the form and medium of choice. Son harks to, but replaces Xie He's six points (繪畫六法: six points of consideration in the practice of painting), such as physical properties of ink, and even expressive techniques of traditional landscape paintings in favor of character personality traits and outward presentation. Change is constant in the artist's subject matter, as is the artist's exploration of traditional modes of painting from Northeast Asia and its spirituality.
