이동기(b. 1967)는 일본의 애니메이션 캐릭터 아톰과 미국의 월트디즈니사 캐릭터 미키마우스를 결합한 ‘아토마우스’(atomaus)로 일본과 서구의 대중문화로부터 자유로울 수 없는 한국 사회를 은유했다. 그러나 대중문화를 차용하는 것 자체가 작업의 주제는 아니다. 이동기는 현대사회에서 생산된 이미지와 텍스트를 수집하고 재배치한다. 아토마우스 역시 그러한 과정을 결과물이다. 그의 대표 시리즈인 <절충주의>는 다양한 출처의 이미지를 재조합 한 작품이자 작가의 태도를 보여주는 하나의 제작 방식이다. 서로 다른 맥락의 이질적인 이미지가 한 캔버스 안에서 충돌하는 그의 작업에는 의식과 무의식, 의미와 무의미, 주체와 비주체의 복잡한 관계를 암시한다. 또한 절충주의는 ‘천재적인 예술가’, ‘독창적인 조형 양식의 창조’와 같은 작가주의에 대한, 예술을 창조한다는 신화에 대한 작가의 냉소적인 태도도 담겨 있다. 

Dongi Lee(b.1967) plays with the animated characters Atom from Japan and Mickey Mouse from the Walt Disney Company in the USA by combining them as Atomaus, thus symbolizing how Korean society cannot be free from outsider pop culture. However, borrowing the pop culture itself is not the main subject of his work. The artist collects and rearranges images and texts from today’s society. The title of the series Eclecticism consciously or unconsciously suggests his way of rearranging images from diverse sources. In his work the images from different contexts conflict on one canvas and they imply the complex relationship between conscious and unconscious, meaning and meaninglessness, main agent and non-agent. Eclecticism also gives an impression of the artist’s cynical attitude towards the idea of a highly productive artist who creates a new visual style or the myth about it.
